William Auten
"I am interested in reimagining shapes and spaces but not simply reducing the familiar and the unfamiliar to lines and arcs. I’m not an abstract expressionist without preconceived notions, but the hues, wipes, smears, brushstrokes, drips, and ghostly underdrawings are part of the improvisation. Just as there are no wrong notes in a jazz solo, there are no accidents when painting; things build upon and pull apart each other on the canvas. What the viewer sees is the process as well as the final. I hope that the colors and shapes individually and wholly contrast, complement, and complete the piece and that those two necessities can’t be immediately replicated by others and, quite possibly, by me."
