Blue haze loves the city tonight
leaves a high-rise couple uninspired.
The one impassioned by searchlights and jets

won't get the other to admit
that like a ferry on a pink-silvered lake
a beautiful word is transitory

fades into dusk's last lines.
Hearts beat, draw-bridges open and close.
In the morning someone forsakes

this panoramic view
giant orange cranes demanding commerce
flash of green neon signs.

Marjorie Manwaring lives in Seattle, where she is a freelance editor and fact-checker. Her work has appeared in 5 AM, Sentence, Four Corners, In Posse Review, and other journals, and she was a semifinalist in the 2005 "Discovery"/The Nation contest.
