Hannah
Harlow received an MFA from the Bennington Writing
Seminars. Until very recently she worked in publishing and
lived in Brooklyn. She and her husband recently moved to Uganda,
where she is working on a novel.
Prescriptive
Hannah Harlow
"Do you like it better this way?" he asked. "Or
this way?"
"I'm sorry, can you adjust the... That's
better."
"Number one or number two?"
"Can you go back?"
"This is number one again." He talked extra slow to give me
more time. He made an adjustment. "And this is number two." He
waited.
"Number two," I said. "I think. They're really almost the same."
He didn't answer.
When he finally leaned back,
he had a grim look on his face.
"Did I do something wrong?" I asked.
"We'll bump you up to a negative seven, but I
don't want to go higher than that," Dr.
Jenkins said.
There was nothing prescriptive.
