Sylvie Kantorovitz grew up in France, and settled in the U.S. in 1985. She studied at Paris's École des Beaux Arts, and at the Art Students League in New York. Of these works, she says, "It became paramount to go back to the original and childlike thrill of simply putting a mark on the paper, to forget about the finished product, to play, to doodle, to paste. This attitude led to a constant state of precarious balance at the easel or drawing table. I found myself oscillating between letting the unconscious take over and calling on the conscious to recognize pleasing shapes. Back and forth, back and forth, letting my unconscious dictate the shapes, the colors, the medium, then deciding to accept the result or to alter it, defining the landscape or the scene that wants to be born."
