Reasons to Shoot the Guy

John Grey

It would be the thrill of a lifetime.
And the noise, the heat, the foiled recoil –
such a statement of power.
And, besides, he makes the perfect target –
his cruelty, his lies, his betrayal –
so much to aim at.

It might even spice up your life,
afford you a new epithet: “Stone cold killer.”
No more love of course.
At least not from his direction.
But no more fear either.
And think of the respect
that would come your way.
From yourself most of all.

And he’d fall to the floor
with a loud thump,
his demise as emphatic,
as your new beginning.
All your anger, your frustration,
would gush out of you
like the blood from his chest.
Then you could retreat
to the bedroom, rest up,
plan the rest of your life.

But you don’t wish to go to prison
so you just show him the door.
But you do slam it
once he’s gone for good.
And a vase topples and breaks.
It is a vase
that’s treated you so thoughtlessly,
so shamefully.
